This bag is made of thick, slightly stiff plastic. The plastic makes this whole bag waterproof, which is more suitable as a "wet separator" than a bag that can be submerged in water and meant to stay dry. This means that when you "close" the bag (you do this by rolling up the top and fastening it with Velcro), it is not completely sealed. Sounds like a simple bag. And it is. Big plastic bag. The smell comes from a fairly strong plastic smell in general and doesn't really transfer to things inside - after a short period of airing. The thickness of the plastic also prevents punctures from small to medium-sized points (like tree branches, falls, or heavy objects sitting on it). Although this large bag can be easily ripped with the appropriate very sharp point, it's unlikely to happen accidentally, so handle it a little roughly and you'll get out good. While you can think of many uses for this bag, I've only used it to separate wet items from dry items. For that it works great. After a swim, I put my swim trunks/towels in without having to lug around extra plastic bags. Note, however, that as with any "somewhat sealed" plastic bag, you should remove wet items as soon as possible to avoid mold growth. However, for round trips and general storage, this bag works well for storing wet items separately. The bag I checked was 23L, big enough to hold lots of large beach towels, swimwear/bikinis and scuba gear (goggles and fins). A warning is that you should not leave this in a place directly under the sun where the bag can get very hot. Depending on the density of this polyethylene plastic bag, any temperature range of 110-130 degrees Celsius (230-260 degrees Fahrenheit) will cause this bag to melt.
