I bought 5 of these. One of them works most of the time, but when the water reaches the depth, it stops working. It needs to be manually pressed down to work again. If you pull on it with your finger, you will eventually notice that the pump switches off. In other words, if the water gets deep enough, it exerts enough pressure to go past the "on" point, collapse, and then get stuck there with the pump inoperative.
