Any bulb, excellent cheap LED bulbs. The problem is that these (5 inch) come with a plastic jug for tracing and cutting a hole in your ceiling. They must have given me those for the big lanterns because all the light goes through the hole. I used a hole saw that matched the size of the jig. So make sure you don't trust the instructions or the jig and I think you'll be fine.
