Luckily for me I was able to mount it overhead in the top FM bay on our Grady 306 Canyon. I had a NMEA 2000 port just above the unit. The VHF is a foot from the AIS and about 3 feet from the fuse box so I was very lucky. It has GPS built in so I guess given the location I don't need GPS but again given its location it would be an easy setup. After connecting, it automatically connected to my chartplotters and showed the reception of other ships. Luckily I had another boat with AIS so I could confirm that Grady was also sending a signal. I still have to connect to a computer and enter personal information to be legal but I was very happy with the product.
