Review on StarTech Com USB VGA Adapter 1920X1200 by Eric Hay

Surprisingly easy to computer cable adapter

Just plug in, add a driver and you're done. I have 2 of these on the sides of my main monitor. that's sooo cool. there were several problems along the way. First, the included driver cannot be used. you need d/l last. then just plug it in and you have more monitors. They are a bit soft/fuzzy. I'm not sure why, maybe the driver compresses the data and it looks a bit boring. or maybe the USB can't handle the full bandwidth. I also use DisplayFusion to control three monitors. I highly recommend it (although it falls off about every 2-3 weeks). I walked in this morning and found that only the right monitor was active. and it was rotated so the mouse was pretty tricky. When restarting, only the main monitor appeared, the other two were blank. Checked device manager and didn't see 2 additional monitors. Restarted adapter, restarted all USB cables, nothing helped. like they don't exist. So I did a SYSTEM RECOVERY. Funny, it only showed the restore point this morning. I run a package every morning that creates a system restore point. You go. something happens with Windows 7, I think not with these adapters. Windows shows its weaknesses again. So I did a restore from this morning and all the monitors came up. but reversed left and right. I changed them in the control panel but my mouse still worked like they weren't toggled. completely useless. So I left them on and changed all of the DisplayFusion settings to reflect that the monitors were switched. great job. The funny thing is that FENCES didn't respond as if the monitors had switched. all groups were displayed correctly on the right and left. I think the problem really was with Windows 7. Something happened last night and everything got mixed up. Luckily there was a system restore point and it worked. So I got everything working and I'm doing a full backup of my C drive, something I don't do often enough. I don't think the problem was with the display adapters, I think Windows 7 was burping and such. I would give 5 stars if the display was clearer but it isn't. I don't think I'll be going back to the same monitor every time. They just plug in and work. There's no need to open a PC, no fiddling with adapter cards, and it's really affordable. very glad i found them!

Pros
  • Useful for more than its intended purpose
Cons
  • boring packaging
