Great blender, much more durable than other reviewers have claimed. The spur gear is heavy chrome plated metal, probably cast aluminum but I can't tell for sure. One reviewer complained that the gears were plastic, which isn't entirely true. They are actually made of durable nylon, the same nylon mechanism you find on most garage door lifts. If these gears can lift a 300 pound garage door a thousand times, this whisk will outlive me. The blades are thick, curved metal rods that blend well and are very easy to clean. The crank arm is made of the same metal as the main body and main gear. This blender is reliable. Very happy with this purchase, especially after realizing that almost no other retail store has hand mixers anymore - not at the grocery store, not at Target, not at Walmart, not at any other store. Almost as expensive as this one and clearly of inferior quality and design which might explain why no one else carries this type of blender. The OXO hand blender, the only other blender I could find at retail, didn't work for me due to my OA; I need a pen that I can grip from above instead of from the side.
