Review on HDMI Switch Monitor Extended Display by Scott Goff

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Wireless keyboard and mouse on the same USB - had problems

Many years ago I had a Belkin box for the PS2 interface - up to 6 computers - and I only used it for 4 computers. Then, when USB devices became the norm for mice, you had to use USB to PS2 converters. Finally I gave up. I started researching when a good USB KVM switch would come out from time to time. I've recently gotten both a Raspberry Pi and a Jetson Nano and the need for this switch grew to seek - again. That's when I came across this device. I read the reviews on the Revain and some of the reviews said the unit was "faulty" so I was a little wary of what I was getting. Photos with all cables helped as my old Belkin cables have been a problem from time to time. So I ordered. The box arrived and didn't seem to weigh much. The box included all the cables you need for dual monitors, plus a USB cable for setting up the keyboard and mouse. Thought I'd try my favorite mouse and keyboard combo, which uses a single USB drive to act as a mouse and keyboard. I set up my main computer and saw that it was recognized, but after 10 seconds it stopped recognizing it. I found that if you unplug the USB from the KVM and plug it back in it starts up again but then stops when you stop using it, it took about 10 seconds. Well, the rating has dropped by one star. So I had to pull out and plug in my oldest wireless mouse with a wired keyboard to see how it worked and it worked. KVM has two USB ports for keyboard and mouse - and apparently they haven't caught up with the single wireless combo yet. Hardware to check support - and I don't have a second monitor setup in my use - I only needed Monitor One as a monitor for the Jetson Nano and Raspberry pi, plus an extended work laptop screen and my main desktop monitor. Even though I had a combo USB plugged in, the "hot key" setting to switch between monitors didn't work for me; When I used separate USB cables for the mouse and keyboard it worked, allowing me to turn on all devices and switch between them as needed. The Nano and the Raspberry Pi 4 appear to support the 4K standard, so the first thing to start with is printing. I have USB 2 devices that the device says are supported. Technology changes over time - USB 3 is much more common, as is 4K. The device should still serve my needs for a few years, then I might have to look at it again.
