Will work in extreme use

I was looking for a reasonably priced product to light up several large fountains at the entrance to the site - yes I use them completely submerged and probably not recommended by the manufacturer. I ordered one of these and after some testing bought 6. I cut and solder new wires to them. I sacrificed a few pixels and stretched the silicone coating, running it through my fingers. Inflate the end with silicone sealant to make it waterproof and secure with UV zip ties. All of this requires some skill and experimentation. I also recommend attaching the end of the strip to the inside of the case to avoid sharp corners as the case can be punctured - the silicone case is flexible and strong enough. I run them with an ESP32 and a common 5V 60 amp power supply. Each fountain has 800 pixels. Color rendering isn't perfect, but it's a fountain - I got the effect I wanted. I did not find any fault prior to installation, so all products arrived working and in good condition. Due to the low cost, I can afford some replacements from time to time. I had a custom length of 100 bugs after being submerged in water for 1 week. The other 90% have been working for a month now, so I think we're fine. An autopsy of the accident shows it was waterlogged (not unexpected) and my own fault (not unexpected either). I drained the water and they work, but I won't be using them in the fountain again. Due to the low cost, I can afford some replacements from time to time. I built the system to be easy to replace. I would do it again. It works in my extreme use case and should have no problem working in other, less harsh environments.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Not automatic
