Review on WilFiks 36-Inch Chopping Axe For Camping And Wood Splitting - Forged Carbon Steel Maul Tool With Heat Treatment, Fiberglass Shock Reduction Handle, And Anti-Slip Grip For Kindling by Scott Galloway

Dull hatchet on my review.

So I got this hatchet just to split small logs - when I say small already split wood and other small wood for kindling. My first impression taking it out of the box was it’s quite heavy for a hatchet. My first feel of the handle was a bit odd with its design. My first feel of the axe head found it was as dull as any normal cheap pocket knife you could buy at Wal-Mart leading me to believe this hatchet might not be able to split even the smallest of logs or small branches.I thought I would try to sharpen the blade a bit. I spent 30 minutes sharpening the axe head with a WorkSharp. After 30 minutes I finally can feel an edge, but it is certainly not sharp enough to cut paper or shave with. The blade originally certainly was not sharpened or worked much from the manufacturer with an uneven edge on the blade. It makes me wonder what this hatchet will be able to do.I did go grab a couple of small, old (probably 10-15 years old) small oak logs I have. It did split the log first hit. But the second log it took three strikes to split the wood. The log was probably 10 inches in diameter just to give a reference.I’d might read the reviews before purchasing this hatchet and find one that is cared for a bit more from the manufacturer.

Pros
  • I haven't gone camping with it yet, but it should work nicely!
Cons
  • The axe's blade may not be suitable for use in extreme cold or hot weather conditions
