I've had a Hamilton Beach hand sealer for over a year and while it worked well I always thought it could be better. First you have to press the thermal lock mechanism, although it is more accurate and reliable, it takes a lot of strength from your wrist. This automatic system works much easier, since you can simply insert the bag into the heating mechanism, press the display button and wait for the work to finish. Also, this Fresko V8 is slimmer and takes up less valuable counter space. Hamilton Beach is twice as wide. A few other pluses are that you can vacuum pack wet items. At the bottom of the heating element is a drip tray that holds liquid that you can empty after each session. There's also an external vacuum so you can attach it to bottle caps and hard containers. I don't have any of those extras so I couldn't test it. Finally, the V8 is also much quieter than the Hamilton. Keep in mind that the V8 is still pretty loud, about halfway through. The touch screen interface is easy to use and very informative. There is an animated circle that needs to be completed before the whole process is complete, so you can track the completion to see how much time is left. With this set you get a supply of 20 8" x 12" bags. I've noticed that when vacuuming, you should leave the smooth side of the bag up for the best results. I'm having a hard time with the rough side of the bag on top getting the vacuum to work.
