Review on Soma 6-Cup Glass Carafe Plant-Based Water Filtration System, White by Megan Walker

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Does the job but has a few drawbacks

I bought this water filter to filter out bad taste and harmful chemicals and because it was the filter with the least amount of plastic. It filters the water fairly quickly and gets rid of the chlorine/skin taste that our water has. So overall it serves its purpose. However, there are 3 things that don't end up working so well. As other reviewers have pointed out, on rare occasions the top lid that you pour water through to filter doesn't open, causing the water to splash over the rim and stay at the top of the container until it either spills out or you open the lid manually. In fact, this only happens when the lid is wet, usually because it's been recently filled, causing a suction-cup-like effect to prevent the lid from opening. Knowing this allows you to predict when this is most likely to happen. We keep our jar on the counter because it looks more inviting and gives us more space in the fridge, and I think it keeps the lid free of condensation so it can be opened more often than if the jar were kept in the fridge. Second, the lid that leaks water when pouring has recently (we had it about 5-6 months ago) started to stick causing the water to just spill out in an unpredictable manner which also caused a bit of chaos. I'm not sure why this happened and I don't know how to fix it. Third, as mentioned, we bought this to keep our water from having as much plastic contact as possible (don't know why it's so hard to find a basic plastic-free water filter). I knew that the water comes into contact with the plastic when you filter it, but it also comes into contact with it when you pour it because the water flows back through the plastic part of the pitcher when you pour it. This design also pushes the water back into the filter, so even when it's fully tilted, the pitcher doesn't completely empty. Overall, it gets the job done and improves the taste of our water, but there are at least a few design flaws. in the way the lids work, which sometimes causes some water to spurt out. I will keep this water filter until I find a better non-plastic filter.
