Review on Alessi Espresso Maker 9090 by Richard Sapper for 6 Espresso Cups by Brian Summers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really well made and works well.

Very high quality. I think this is a real Made in Italy Alessi product. The pot and box are well marked (see photo) and unlikely to be a Chinese fake. I have been using espresso machines for 30 years. You are not producing real espresso because the pressure is too low. I have a high end Italian espresso machine so the difference is very clear. That doesn't mean the Alessi 9090 doesn't make good coffee - it does. Alessi produces strong coffee. A 6/3 cup size makes about 8 ounces of strong coffee to which I add about 4 ounces of hot water. The result is like a good Americano. I make coffee in Alessi 9090, starting with very hot tap water. Research has shown that stovetop machines can actually force water through coffee that is too cold if not preheated. With hot water, after 4-5 minutes on the stovetop (set to high power), the coffee will begin to seep through the coffee and brew coffee in 5-6 minutes. I turn the stove down to medium when the coffee comes out. I've used an aluminum GAT pan for moka in the past which has worked well, but I always wonder if it's a good idea to use aluminum for food and drink preparation. . Alessi 9090 stainless steel seems to be more durable. I will say that my 25 year old GAT seems to develop more punch and slightly creamier coffee. Maybe the screw caps have a pressure relief valve? I like the snap lock feature on the Alessi 9090 which seems to work well. Some reviewers have complained that Alessi may have rust in the pot. Inside, at the bottom of the pot, there is a seam (see photo) where water can remain after use and cause rust. Make sure the seam in the floor is dry. It is well known that stainless steel will rust if you leave water in the crevice. Possible rust is very, very slight and not a health or taste issue, but if you want to avoid it just let it dry well. I put the bottom of the pot on the stove for about 30 seconds after washing to heat it up, after which the seam dries slightly.
