Great budget 4K A/V receiver

I recently set up a 5.1 home theater system in my bonus room along with a 4K Vizio TV and needed an A/V receiver that supported 4K video . and 5.1 channels. I stumbled upon this Sony receiver at Revain and for less than $200 it met all my needs on paper. Having had several Sony products in the past I decided I couldn't go wrong with the Sony STRDH770 A/V Receiver. Here is my Sony STRDH770 review. Setup: Setting up the STRDH770 was very easy and took very little time (not including the time it took to connect the speaker cables). After all speaker cables are connected, I chose the Easy Setup option, which prompted me to connect a calibration microphone. the cable that came with the receiver (it looked like a small black disk) into the calibration microphone connector on the front of the receiver. Once I did that, I began speaker calibration, which determined where the speakers were in relation to the listener. Speaker calibration took less than a minute and was very easy. --------------------------------- ----- ------------------------- ----------- ------------ Design: Before I move on to the design of the STRDH770, I want to tell you that this receiver is much larger than it looks in the pictures looks. It measures over a foot wide and a foot long and almost a foot tall. I was surprised how big it is but I don't think so that it will be a problem. The STRDH770 has a beautiful modern design that looks very premium. On the front are two large rotary controls for input selection and volume control. Although they look good I was disappointed that they are made of plastic and look very cheap. Most of the receiver is made out of plastic, but this shouldn't be a big deal as it'll just sit next to your TV most of the time. I'm not too upset with the build quality of the STRDH770, especially when it only cost me $200. Overall, Sony did a great job of making the receiver look high-end even though it only cost $200.------------------------- ---- ---------------------------------------------- ---- -------------------User Interface: The Sony receiver has a very simple menu consisting of 4 different options to choose from: View, Listen, Easy Setup and Speaker Setup. Selecting "View" takes you to different video links. Selecting "Listen" takes you to Bluetooth or FM radio, which you can listen to by plugging in the tiny FM radio that's included. You can also connect your phone to the receiver via NFC (Near Field Communication) if your phone supports this function. If this is your first time using the receiver I would recommend choosing the easy setup as it is the quickest way to set up your home theater. However, if you want to fine-tune your speaker settings, you can select "speaker settings" where you can change the sound gain and the distance between each speaker relative to the listener. The Sony STRDH770's user interface is simple and straightforward, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and is exactly what I've come to expect from a budget receiver. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------Functions A: The STRDH770 has some features for less than $200. First, it supports 4k videos with HDR. So if you have a 4k HDR TV, it works fine with that. The receiver is also compatible with NFC which, if your phone supports it, is much easier to connect than Bluetooth. In terms of audio, there's HD Digital Cinema Sound, which sounds great to most people. The Sony receiver also has several equalizer settings such as movie, music and night mode. Night mode boosts vocals so you can hear what people are saying when you're watching TV at a low volume. To me, at least, this receiver sounds great and is well worth its low price of $200. -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------Connectivity: One of the best things about this receiver is the number of HDMI ports it comes with. . The STRDH770 has 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output that connects to your TV. At the moment I have an Xbox, a Blu-ray player and a cable box connected to the receiver and I still have one free connection. I don't understand why anyone would need more than 4 HDMI ports, especially when a device like the Xbox One S can function as a games console, streaming device, Blu-ray player, and cable box with just one HDMI port. . As an added bonus, Sony has integrated NFC and Bluetooth into this receiver. Overall I think this receiver is worth buying in terms of connectivity if you are on a budget. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------Conclusion A: Overall I think Sony has been successful with the Sony STRDH770. For under $200 you really can't go wrong and I doubt anyone can find a better 7.2ch 4k receiver for under $300. If you are looking for a great 4k HDR compatible 7.2 channel receiver on a budget, look no further.----------------------- ------------------ - ----------------- -------------- ------------------ - -------Pros: - Great design - Easy setup - Sounds great - Plenty of HDMI ports - NFC Cons: - Plastic If you found this review helpful I would appreciate it if you click the helpful button below this review.
