Faulty strap.
I bought this (Singer Prelude R8280) and in my case yes it was brand new. but I had to spend an extra $100 to get it working by taking it to a repair shop because it came with a broken belt and not on time. If you want to buy this model, please test it before you do anything! I bought this for my mum for Mother's Day so didn't want to deal with the return and decided to take it to a repair shop instead.
