Connected rubber band? For real?

I bought these for my granddaughters for Christmas. When I opened them up I took one out to check how tight they were and as soon as I stretched them (like you would put on a ponytail) the elastic broke! As I felt the rest, I realized that the elastic is NOT solid elastic, but a piece of elastic tied in a knot! Not sure how they will hold up but will give it a few days to see if more pops and hopefully the rest will hold up. Although I'm skeptical!
