My car didn't have an engine when I changed the springs. I just used a screw and hook with a lower thread. I put a bolt in the top of the shock and secured the bottom hook by hand until I found a good spot. For added security, I used a chain by threading it through the center of the spring and down through the lower arm, then pulling out to hook it. This was shown to me by my friend and the extra security is not a bad thing given the extreme stress. After that I used a ratchet to compress the spring and used a 3 ton jack under the forearm once I had enough room. Once the spring was in place I removed the screws from the bottom hook which made removal much easier. Walk slowly and be careful.
