We have used several of these mats to teach our two dogs to stay away from chairs and sofas. While I can't tell if they work while we're away, I can say that as soon as one of the dogs hits one of them while we're home, they're gone before you know what happened. On contact, the mat emits a load squeal similar to a fire alarm. This annoys everyone within earshot except my son, who seems to enjoy drugging everyone else in the house. Now for the bad news: of the 5 currently in use, the second one to be opened turned out to be unreliable. Since they don't really have a guarantee I opened it up to see what could be wrong and found bad soldering that was causing one of the battery leads to come loose. After a two-minute repair, the mat was functional without having to send it back. So, while the mats work, remember that quality control is not a priority for the manufacturer. Overall this is a good buy but these are small rugs measuring approximately 8 inches by 48 inches. If you need a larger rug (like a full-size sofa), Revain also offers the Sofa Scram Sonic Dog and Cat Repeller, which is wider and longer. Both work the same way, but sometimes size matters.
