As a barrier, the cat keeps the sofa from further abrasion. My cat was definitely not interested in using it as a scratch mat! Whoever designed this has definitely never owned a cat! It has 2 velcro straps at the bottom on each side to wrap around the sofa leg as an anchor - they were too short. I couldn't use the Velcro on the back. It didn't reach the legs of my back sofa. The front Velcro barely reached the leg of the front sofa by a few inches. After a few days my cat started CHEWING on both Velcro straps - cats love fibrous stuff! I was afraid she might swallow it because she broke off a piece at the end. So I cut off the velcro for my cats safety. Once the velcro straps were removed it was impossible to attach them. There is also a small plastic ring that you need to thread the velcro through (see 2nd photo) and it broke VERY EASY. My advice is don't waste your money! You can buy plastic screens cheaper and buy something you know likes to scratch.
