Review on πŸ” Optimized for SEO: Amprobe AMP-210 Clamp Meter by Tim Duncan

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not sure if I'll let it? Edit: I've decided to undo this.

This is a good gauge for many reasons. I received this gauge today and have had a little practice with it. First, it has everything you need except a body magnet and light clip. Everything an HVAC specialist needs is here, including two functions that are hard to find on a single meter: inrush current and microamps. Many counters have one or the other, but not both. Now for the bad and the reason for only three stars: This meter doesn't measure capacitance well. For an HVAC specialist, this is important. Today we all pulled out our meters and measured the starting capacitor, which is about 475 microfarads. One probe had about 480, another Ampersonde had 470, another probe had 116, about the same. This counter started at 230, climbed to over 900, then bounced off and finally stopped at 390. I should be able to check the start and run capacitors! I need a meter that does this well. I assume this is because the 1.5 volt batteries just can't charge the cap. I would recommend this meter for many functions but not HVAC. Amprobe should set this up for a 9V supply. I can return this meter soon, I will try again tomorrow. Edit #1 I did some additional testing today. This time we tested the inrush current function. In my opinion, there isn't really a jerk function because it only measures the min/max value. The test was a small 120V compressor. Full load current is about 4 1/2 amps, RLA on this meter reads 21 amps, all others read 28-29 amps. Percentagewise this is more than the desired spread. For a 15A 230V compressor the RLA should be around 100A. If this percentage is correct, only 80 will be measured. This can be misleading and lead to errors in diagnosing the system. I tested this gauge twice for two different required functions. I compared the results with the Fluke 292, the Amprobe ACDC 54NAV and the capacitance with the Fluke 116. I have decided not to keep this meter and to send it back. Too bad, the meter's size and weight are perfect, and its functions are easy to learn, much easier than the 54NAV. This counter cost me about $140, for that price you can buy better, I decided to return this counter.
