I was hoping for a slightly stronger signal by replacing the standard antennas on my Linksys EA 6900 router. Using the RE7000 expander's built-in diagnostics, no signal improvement was measured on the expander, despite the many improvements in the larger size . So for me it was of no benefit. I'm not sure under what conditions this would happen or if the active electronics would somehow need to detect a different antenna, but at least the Linksys EA6900 either already had better antennas or didn't know what to do with them.
