Problem solved with external monitor
I had a 2020 MacBook Pro (M1) and a 27" LG 4k monitor, the cable that came with the monitor worked, but often after waking from sleep the screen falls to the resolution back 720p and i have to unplug and plug the monitor back in to get the full 4k resolution and it doesnt charge all the time either.Replaced that cable with a JSAUX cable and have had no problems since.I have hooked it up to a 24 pin safety extension so I don't worry about accidentally disconnecting it, it works great now.
