Review on Samsung YX-M1Z Helix XM2go Portable Satellite Radio featuring Built-in MP3 Player by Chris Lapan

Very cool product

The battery problem mentioned in other reviews has been fixed with a new firmware update. If you buy this, be sure to update the firmware - a simple task that Samsung will walk you through. That's all I wanted. I want it to work without an external antenna in the buildings, but at some point it needs access to the satellite. To use it during my workouts, I just record a few hours of XM at home, then take it to the gym and play the recorded music (or whatever). To record XM, mount it in a mount with an external antenna set up to access the sky. It charges while recording. Take it off the cradle and go. I used it for 3 hours on a single charge after taking it off the stand the day before. It will probably last longer, but I didn't have to test it. Interestingly, when the display is on the side of the stand, it shifts 90 degrees so it's always upright. I use it with Bose noise canceling headphones and the sound is great. It easily accepts MP3 or CD files with the included Napster software. This software also allows you to organize your music, add and remove track by track or playlist by playlist. Recorded XM music needs to be added to the playlist, but CDs or MP3s are automatically added to playlists. The manual says it can hold 25 hours of XM AND 8 hours of MP3. I haven't checked it, but I have no reason to doubt it. (Memory can be split to use up to 100% for XM and 0 for MP3 or vice versa, or any combination of the two formats.) All in all, it's better than I was hoping for. Having invested nearly $600 including Bose headphones and an extra home kit (one for the office, one for home) I really need it to be good. That.

Pros
  • Robust design
Cons
  • Requires socket
