Review on Shop Fox W1840 Variable-Speed Grinder With Work Light, 8 by Jeff Islam

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Grinder was damaged upon arrival, box it came in was perfectly fine.

Grinder was damaged even though the factory box was perfectly fine. Due to an unforeseen surgery I was not able to unbox and inspect for almost 3 months. During that time it stayed in the original Ebay box that it was shipped in. Wheel was broken, shroud and shaft were bent. I contacted Woodstock customer support and the "lead" technician Andrew strongly advised me not even to turn the grinder on due to safety concerns. After sending them pictures of every side of the box, and all the damage to the grinder, they changed their tune and I was then told go ahead and try turning the grinder on to see if it had any wobble or shimmy. I told them I did not feel comfortable doing that due to seeing safety videos from machine shop in high school and what an exploding grinder wheel can do to a person's face. They absolutely refused to send a refund or replacement due to the fact that I did not open the box within 14 days. So now I'm out $250 and all I have is a clunky paperweight. I'm sure (if it was undamaged), it's a good grinder, but the simple fact that it was damaged at the factory before it was put in the box and the customer service from the Woodstock team refusing to do absolutely anything about it is the reason for this review. My advice is if you do order this Grinder, you better hope nothing stands in your way of opening up the box and inspecting it before your two weeks is up.

Pros
  • Silent and work's perfect. Sharpens dill bits very well.
Cons
  • The variable-speed feature is not as smooth as it should be, and there are some noticeable jumps between the different speeds
