If you change your water and filter media regularly, your algae shouldn't be too dangerous. If you notice a sudden bloom of algae, it probably means an ammonia surge. Place this chemical, scrape the edges to make it as soft as possible, let it sit for a while, then vacuum the base. You may need more than one treatment, use them exactly as directed. I don't know if it affects live plants or how it interacts with other chemicals.
