I wanted something that would ventilate well for Arizona's brutal summer heat but something that would provide better protection than a basic textile mesh jacket and I didn't want it outright with off-road pads and chest/back protection (I've tried it, hated it, it looks very uncomfortable and silly, plus exposed skin burns easily in the sun). This thing was just a ticket. It's just as breathable or better than some other mesh jackets I've tried, and it sits where you want it (inside the arms and torso), while the thick, tough leather parts are where you need protection (Back, Shoulders and OUTSIDE). The zippers work great and they have small fabric tabs already attached to make them easier to grab with gloves on. Doubtful I have very serious doubts about the back protector, particularly since it looks like a two-layer version of the same sheet of scrap foam that fits into almost any cycling jacket, but I think if you're carrying a backpack then there won't be much of a difference. Also, the shoulder pads are HUGE and FLAT, which doesn't bode well for mounting or protection. You either want to roll behind or in front of your shoulders, which is bad for both protection and comfort. Worse, you can't replace them with anything because the pockets for these big pads are so huge that all other pad brands/types I've tried are too small and just float there. They would have to do some creative stitching or whatever to get the smaller and better pads to fit properly. Velcro straps at the neck and wrists are almost useless, and the Velcro "belt" at the waist just gets in the way and isn't easy to remove if you're walking around with your jacket open. I ended up completely cutting off the "belt" at the waist and haven't missed it since. The downside to these small zippers is that the wrist zippers also like to snag on things, so I just took them off (they just pop open) and the middle one tends to twist and repeatedly bang you in the neck at highway speeds , so you might want to consider replacing it with a heavier custom tongue that doesn't rotate as easily. Also, the jacket technically has reflective piping, but they're not THAT reflective (those are tiny stripes), so don't get too worked up about that detail. And yes, THEY GET CUTE WHEN THEY STILL NOT MOVE. It's the animal nature of ANY jacket, be it fabric, mesh or whatever, or even if you don't have a jacket at all - no movement means no airflow, so you'll get hot.
