A few years ago I started learning how to sharpen knives with sticks. While it doesn't take long to understand the logic - just watch a few videos - it takes patience and diligence to truly understand how to fine-tune a blade. Not all sharpening stones are suitable for sharpening all tools. For example the sharpening stone in this set. 3000/8000, used to sharpen a blade that is already the right shape. Notching a garden tool with a 3000 grit stone is going to take forever - a job befitting a grinder and then a 400. It is called a whetstone because it is designed to work the blade after the stone has been soaked in water, causing the edge of the blade to work against the stone. This set includes a silicone mat stand that will hold the sharpening stone in place as you work, as long as it's resting on a smooth, flat surface. I recommend not soaking these stones in room temperature water for more than 15-20 minutes as this will loosen the glue holding the two halves together. Challenging sets, this one works well for its intended purpose and is of solid construction. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a whetstone to sharpen kitchen knives or pocket knives.
