Review on Dorman Cabin Air Filter Retrofit Kit 259-201 for Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC Models by Matt Bokil

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great product but there are two tips that are not in the instructions.

First, the fact that this retrofit kit is even necessary for a cabin air filter on a $40,000 truck makes me reconsider buying a GM product in the future, but all automakers cut corners . I give GM 3 stars and this Dorman product 5 stars. The included installation guide was very detailed with pictures; However, I would recommend making 2 changes to the instructions provided. 1) There are 3 screws securing the skid plate under the dash, one of which is hidden behind the center console (another GM design mess). The included instructions state that you must remove the two accessible screws and allow the skid plate to dangle in the floorboard, which gets in the way. Remove the insert in the center console (which initially pops out slightly at the rear) so you can access the hidden screw on the skid plate across the entire center console. 2) My second recommendation is to use a heat gun to gently (without melting) heat the plastic where the notched window is. Once you've done that, a fixed blade utility knife cuts straight through and you can make a nice clean cut. In my opinion a Dremel tool will only mess things up. Once I figured it out, it only took about 30 minutes to install. It's also not necessary, but you might consider using a plastic bristle brush to clean the coils when they're very dirty, as I've had for several years without a filter. Buy a heat exchanger foam cleaner they sell here. Much luck!
