These are the first compression stockings I've bought after trying a pair of my wife's (completely different brand). I bought these socks to prevent swollen feet in the evenings, as well as help with running, sprained shins, etc. These socks appear to be very well made and offer STRONG compression. I wear size 10 shoes (sometimes 10.5) and bet the big one will be enough for my rather voluminous calves (which measure 17-17.5 inches). My calves are so big my thighs look small. I think muscular calves. I had to go for XL as the top band ends a little lower than "above the knee" and softens the muscles when I wear them all day. They're still fully usable for shorter sessions, so I won't be switching. If you feel you have very large calves, you can choose one size larger.
