They work well as a regular bottle cage. Just be careful when attaching the holder to the bike. The holder cage is made of metal and the back is made of plastic. The supplied mounting material has no washers. If you only use the supplied screws and over-tighten or apply too much force to the mount, the screw head will break out of the plastic backing and the mount will fall off. It would be better to add a washer to the screws before installing the holders.
