Review on Cooper Atkins 6812 01 3 Thermometer Certified Temperature by Brad Blake

Revainrating 2 out of 5

not adjustable, not calibratable

Getting it out of the blister pack was a tedious job at first. These devices are unreliable and easily damaged. To compound the problem, the ends of the "wire ties" holding the capillary tube extension in a circle were cut off, making them extremely difficult to remove. Worse, the "cable" was bent nearly 90º by the brass block that holds the needle and such. While the sensor itself is standard, a mounting bracket is not included - be prepared to drill new mounting holes, and mounting screws are not included. It's a good idea to test the device first - stick the end of the capillary in a bucket of ice water and you should get a reading of 32ºF. This device was deviated by 20 degrees. The setup instructions seem clear. Remove the clear plastic cover. Hmm, is that a screw or do you push it out? - There is no slot for a screwdriver, but you can pry it out with a thin screwdriver --- it pops out. You now have a slot from which you can presumably adjust the needle. Unfortunately, not a single ordinary screwdriver fits in this slot. This is a very narrow gap. I am a locksmith and have a gunsmith and jewelers screwdriver and found one that fits the slot snugly (WARNING! Do not attempt to adjust this device with a screwdriver that does not fit the slot snugly or you will break the slot adjusting screw) in the right place I tried to adjust the block but couldn't - the adjusting screw froze up and wouldn't move despite careful effort. My fridge doesn't need to be checked, but I need to check the unit. often as it contains fish with ice. I thought an NSF certified pressure gauge would be nice, but I have to mark the dial (it shows over 20º deviation) with a black marker to make sure the temperature inside is safe. I cannot contact the seller or manufacturer in any way. Revain is now charging me a 48 mile round trip to return the item so I'll probably just keep it but at a price that makes me feel ripped off. The only reason I didn't give it a "one star" is because the device responds quickly to temperature changes and appears to be accurate in temperature readings, even when the readings are far away. Remember that NSF is a monopoly and NSF athletic certification is not a mark of quality.

Pros
  • Graduated thermometers
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
