Due to the color and material I wasn't sure I would keep the carpet strips. In the photo, the carpet looks two-tone. Burgundy with beige or cream in the shape of a diamond. The material is also similar to felt. Thought I'd give it a try as I bought them to protect my hard work of regrinding and painting the stairs. I have to say it turned out pretty well, I was able to choose a different pattern for the back of the stairs and if I had chosen the original color for the stair slats my choices might have been limited. I know maybe it's the packaging, but some had the edges turned up and the middle pulled up, the mats come folded in the box. You may want to keep them horizontal until they are ready to ship.
