Great Macro Flash: Flashes

I bought a very cheap ring flash a year ago. Cheapness more than justifies its name. You often get what you pay for. I'm primarily a wildlife photographer, but I try my hand at macro photography from time to time. Since I don't do macro photography very often, I really didn't want to spend almost $1000 on a Canon macro flash and had to turn around and buy an adapter to fit the end of my Canon 100mm macro lens. It's just stupid in my opinion. Not to mention that Canon only offers an adapter ring for 100mm lenses. There are no other options. Also, I wasn't so sure about the two side flares and not the middle ring flare. I can see where side flashes would be useful, but even with a cheap ring flash, I found having a central light source very useful. After reading the reviews of this Nissin ring flash I decided to give it a try as it costs at least half the price of a Canon macro flash. In addition, several adapters are actually supplied. Not only can I use it with a 100mm macro lens, but I can also use it with a 100-400mm telephoto lens. This ability helps a lot because butterflies are headstrong so I had to use a 100-400mm lens on them. I also used to have to wait for perfect lighting towards the sun to capture it nicely. No longer! With this Nissan flash I can take great pictures even on cloudy days! For someone like me who only does macro photography, buying this flash can get pretty expensive. Just take it from someone who was there and did it. Cheaper alternatives are not worth spending money on. If you want to get great macro shots, even if you only take out your macro lens a few times a year, it's worth investing in a Nissan Macro Ring Flash. The Nissin also feels well made. The adapters are actually made of metal as promised and are very durable. I still have to play around with it a lot, but so far I'm very impressed with the few times I've used it.

Pros
  • POWERFUL RING FLASH. With a guide number of 16 (m), the MF18 offers maximum depth of field for close-ups of nature and teeth, ie f/32 with 100mm macro lenses
Cons
  • Long delivery time
