Review on LG 32UN500-W 31.5" Virtually Borderless Monitor with 3840x2160p, Anti-Glare Display, Built-In Speaker, and Wall Mount Compatibility by Christopher Mahoney

Good screen / terrible firmware

The screen is sharp and bright, and colors are surprisingly vivid for a VA panel. It's good if you manage to set it up correctly and if it works correctly in your setup. Some of the choices made and the layout of the software (menus) don't make sense to me. For example, if you disable HDR on HDMI, you also disable 4k60 and disable free syncing for EACH INPUT. That's right, you can't disable HDR on HDMI1 and then play a game with free sync on the Displayport input. Enabling Freesync on the DP will force HDR on the HDMI ports at the same time. What relationship does one have to the other? No idea. This is compounded by the fact that this monitor is too dark to display HDR content. Properly configured HDR looks the same as SDR when HDR is disabled. It "supports" ONLY HDR TITLES. That means it can technically decode an HDR stream, but it can't DISPLAY HDR. Since the monitor does not have the necessary brightness, it limits the dynamic range of the incoming HDR signal until it can display it, i.e. converts HDR to SDR. And if you're unlucky enough to be watching SDR content with HDR enabled, it looks dark, gray and horribly washed out due to the dynamic range being more than halved. Since you can't turn off HDR without also turning off 4k60 (HDMI) AND turning off free syncing for EACH INPUT, you're stuck with that if you connect a source that supports HDR. The best way to use this monitor is to connect it to Windows 10 and then turn off HDR in the Windows advanced display settings. Since you don't get any benefit from HDR, you lose nothing by disabling it in Windows. If you're planning on plugging a streaming dongle (or set-top box) into one of the AUX inputs to watch TV while your computer is off, this monitor isn't for you. If you're still stuck with that, try disabling HDR on the button, or if you can't, crank the brightness and contrast all the way up and it'll look good, but it'll still be a bit boring. *** Verdict: This is a pretty good 4k SDR monitor, but they screwed it up by cracking FAKE HDR "Support" on a screen that can't actually display it. *** Avoid this monitor unless you are getting an amazing deal and you know what you are getting into. The monitor would be way better if they just cut out their FAKE HDR entirely.
