So far this kit has worked great and I have no complaints. I have used a chain breaking tool and missing link pliers to replace the chain on my bike (9 speed cassette) with no problems and I will be making another one soon. and a setting of 1.0 if the readings I've taken indicate that the chain should be changed on a modern bike even at 0.50, and 1.0 would be very different from the spec. Maybe they're just trying to sell chains. But given the difference in cost between replacing a chain or anything else that touches it, I think I'll just change chains more often than necessary. However, I might end up using a different circuit test tool. But as long as I need to make some chains on a budget I'm very happy with it. Acquiring similar instruments from another popular brand cost me almost $45.
