The unit comes with a modified bracket which is easy to remove as I replaced my existing dumb LED ceiling light and didn't. Applications are not required. The only confusing part was figuring out how to put the light into adjustment mode. Eventually I found out that you have to turn the light on and off 3 times with the wall switch. Leave the light on the 3rd switch, the light will start flashing, letting you know it's ready to connect to the internet. While you can use the wall switch to turn the light on and off, leaving it on on the switch and controlling the light with your app gives you more options. You can control several lights individually or as a group of lights. What worries me most about this light source (and almost every IoT device) is what happens when I lose internet. This requires at least a local Wi-Fi connection, but I'm not sure if you can create and save new programs if you don't have an internet connection. That's why I saved my old dumb flashlights for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
