I am a 62 year old bachelor and have cooked all my life, back when I was helping my mother. She used a paring knife, but I never mastered it. When I moved here to Utah, my son's girlfriend threw away my old food slicer. I ordered this when she moved in and I took over the cooking. This is one of the most versatile and useful slicers I've ever owned. The only downside I can find is that the stakes aren't enough to do what they would otherwise be able to do. It slices potatoes, onions, and anything else I've tried to chop, and the beauty of it is that you can put it on a large bowl and you don't have to keep emptying the small container. The handle has long serrations that retract as you get close to the blade and holds most foods fairly securely, keeping your fingers off the cutting blade. Someone wrote that the holder was a joke, but if you want a joke, get the ones that have little plastic pins sticking out that don't hold anything. I gave it four stars due to the issue I mentioned earlier. But when it comes to slicing and dicing, it's as fast as you can slide the veggies around. As a longtime chef, I recommend this product for fast cutting and finger protection. fred
