It's a great lens for the price.

I bought this lens for my Canon Crop Sensor DSLR. Since this is a crop sensor camera, that 85mm lens is roughly equivalent to a 135mm lens. I have a 50mm f/1.8 lens, which is the equivalent of an 80mm lens, so I bought this lens for something longer. I didn't want to spend a lot on it as I won't be using it that often, but it would be nice to have it with such a low aperture when needed. For this money, literally hundreds less than brand name 85mm lenses, this lens is a keeper. I have a few minor complaints but then again I didn't expect it to be perfect for the price and it performed better than I ever expected. All attached photos were taken on the day I received the lens. They were all taken between 11pm and 11:30pm at ISO 400 or 1600, f1.8, handheld, 1/25 to 1/125 second. First, this lens has no image stabilization. So since it's acting as a mid-range telephoto lens, it may require shooting skills or the use of monochrome or a tripod at slower shutter speeds to minimize blur. Second, the autofocus is noisy. Not very loud, but definitely louder than any Canon or Sigma lens I own. Significantly louder. If a wedding was recorded with this lens it would be audible, unlike my Canon or Sigma lenses. Third, at f/1.8, high-contrast objects like lightbulbs against a night sky or tree leaves against a bright sky show purple fringes. It's barely noticeable at f2.0, but not at f2.8 and above. These purple fringes are not uncommon on many lenses when used wide open. This can also be remedied very easily in image editing programs. Most have a "Border Removal" type setting that removes them when enabled. All of the lightbulbs in the attached photos had a purple border, but my program removed it by simply checking the box in the program. At f1.8 the images are a bit soft wide open (not bad actually), at f2.0 there is a noticeable improvement and at f2.8 I would say the sharpness is excellent. From f4.0 to f11 photos are amazing. A slight chromatic aberration is noticeable when looking, but it is not noticeable. It's more noticeable at f16 and f22, but then again it's not uncommon on a lot of lenses with apertures that really small. I didn't add any day shots because if you like the night shots I uploaded at f1.8 you will love your daylight photos. The lens seems solid. It's a plastic lens, not metal, so shouldn't be mishandled, but the mount is a metal ring and connects securely. I don't know what the longevity will be like. At this price you clearly have to make compromises. Time will tell and I'll update if there's anything new to report. I have no idea what the photos from this lens will look like on a full frame sensor camera, but on my crop sensor they are better and bigger than I expected for the price. For me a useful addition at this price, because I sometimes need this focal length.
