Review on ACDelco 252 470 Professional Water Pump by Jeff Rhodes

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is not an easy task for a 2002 Ford Ranger

The water pump is well made and fits perfectly. It seems to work well and is very quiet. With my Ford Ranger, that's not an easy task. You should be aware that removing the old water pump could potentially break the seal between the timing chain cover and the block and allow water to leak out. To remove the timing chain cover, you need to remove the vibration damper, unclip the air conditioner bracket and pull it to one side. When removing the cover you could potentially damage the oil pan gasket (the underside of the timing chain cover rests against the front of the oil pan). Replacement requires removal of the oil pan. On my truck, the back of the oil pan engages the transmission dust cover (5 speed manual). This means the transmission has to be disassembled to remove the oil pan, which involves removing the exhaust pipe and other things. All of this may not happen, but if your truck is old and the seals are brittle, you know what that could mean. It's really difficult to clean the sealing surface on the timing chain cover where the water pump is - it's hidden behind a bunch of stuff.
