Following the instructions (especially when it comes to taking the ice cubes out of the freezer a few minutes before you start breaking the ice) should help. We were dismayed reading the reviews after buying it as a birthday present for our Freezee loving son, but were then pleased (and relieved) that it worked well for us. Keep in mind that this isn't claiming to be a commercial machine hooked up to syrup and soda; he just mixes cola with lots of fine ice. For the price it should be enough.
