My almost 7 year old son struggles with bedwetting. A little story about him: As a child he had sleep apnea and at the age of 4 he had his tonsils and adenoids removed. He sleeps very well and has sleepwalked several times. Before Chummy, he did pull-ups every night and stayed dry an average of 2 nights a week. Several times I didn't let it boot up for weeks to see if that would help. But it didn't help, he slept in wet pajamas and woke up a few hours after wetting the bed. My doctor recommended a bed alarm system, and I chose Chummy's rug because it's less obtrusive than a lingerie clip. We used Chummy religiously for 3 months and I kept his dry nights on a calendar with stickers. It was an up and down, some weeks were great but others included changing the sheets every night for a week running! In general, he urinates less frequently and has an average of 4-5 dry nights per week. We will use Chummie for as long as it takes as my son doesn't mind using it and I like to get him out of his wet pajamas and bedding right away rather than hours later. I also want to share with you how we use chummy and some tips I have. Chummy is about the size of a baby plastic napkin or flexible cutting board. It turned out to be stiffer than I expected and quite noisy when moved around in bed. As my son is a heavy sleeper, noise is not a problem for him. This can be an issue for those who are light sleepers, or for children with texture or sound sensitivity. My son liked the friendly look of the alarm clock and loved that "Chummie" means his friend/buddy who wanted to help him through dry nights. The rug has a long, thin cord about 8 feet in length. It has a clip to attach to the edge of the bed or pillow, but after about a week my son was put to sleep by the alarm. So it was nice that the cable was so long and we could stretch it so that the alarm clock was in the hallway and now it wakes me up instead. The alarm clock is louder than the alarm clock, but quieter than a normal alarm clock. It has various alarm settings, but it is difficult to change the settings or check the settings. There is a button on the side of the alarm clock that you can press up or down. The number of presses up or down determines how you change the settings. It was difficult to understand and once I found a setting that worked for us I just stopped messing with it. This feature may use some improvements in future Chummie models. Chummy is very sensitive to moisture and with your baby sleeping on a plastic sheet, sweat becomes a problem. The alarm sounds through the dampness of her sweat, creating a false alarm, but there's a remedy: layers! From the top layer down: a sheet (both fine cotton and flannel will do), then a thin beach towel folded in half, then super soft, then a waterproof duvet, then a regular mattress topper. I also fold one end (about 4 inches) of a beach towel under the bottom end of the chummy, this will help prevent it from moving around when your child rolls around at night. This sits on top of the waterproof cot guard just to make cleaning easier for me. The waterproof pad is the same size to fit in a backpack and is slightly larger than Chummie's so spills remain on the waterproof mat which means less washing as the mattress pad stays dry. Since we perfected this shift system, we haven't had a single false alarm. When my son urinates I hear the alarm and wake up then I press the alarm button so it stops beeping then I have to wake my son then I peel off all wet dry chummy. with any sheets that have a dry spot, then i make the bed while my son changes his pajamas and goes to the bathroom, i check if the alarm is still on, then back to bed. Weekly, I wipe Chummy with a damp paper towel and pat dry. It hasn't retained any odors or discoloration and seems to be holding up very well. Some reviewers mentioned that the cables weren't attached to the mat, I don't think that would have happened in normal use, but if you trip over the cable or pull on it too hard, the cables can snap. So overall I'm very happy with Chummie. and i think it helps my son. I think the big problem is that my son is a very heavy sleeper and Chummy will be more effective for those who are light sleepers. It's still worth the investment and time to change the sheets, and I prefer it to pull-ups or sleeping in wet pajamas. The only negatives for me, so 4 stars instead of 5, are the noise of the plastic and the awkward button to change the settings, but neither makes much of a difference. Also, I think it's great and I'm glad my son doesn't mind at all. I still have hope that over time my son will have even fewer wet nights.
