Good leash, but hurts hands if you grab anywhere other than by handle

I like this leash a lot. I use it for my dog every time we go out for a walk.Sometimes we need a shorter leash and need to grab it along the rope and not just the handle (like if we're going close to traffic or are avoiding another dog). I noticed that when I grab it anywhere other than the handle and my dog pulls, it really hurts my hands! No injury has been caused, but wow it's so unpleasant. However, the leash is very nice and has lasted us over two years, now!

The leash may be too thick or too thin for some dog breeds
