First the coffee maker arrived in good condition. So I opened the box and found shiny glass and metal. silver and black. Cool. Appears to be well made. So I looked at a page of instructions. then I put on my 2x reading glasses. Then I read the instructions. Or rather, I saw words tied together. I have to say that this is exceptionally the WORST Chinese to English "translation" I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot! Apparently, my number shouldn't be based on my number, but on some upheaval. and humor. So. Well, back to the internet. (Since there was no mention of the type of fuel needed, which by the way could be any liquid burner or lamp fuel, but I really don't recommend using paraffin. More on that later.) So while you're reading the Revain Q&A, I have found that I can use tap water (no, not for fuel) so I started with that. Raise my water to 5°C (By the way, these aren't 5-8 ounce cups. This is closer to 2 large coffee cups). Hook that thing into the tube and ATTACH IT to the bottom of the tube!) I placed the upper chamber firmly onto the lower and lit my lamp. Make sure the lower neck of the chamber is in the clip. not the neck of the upper chamber. So. Water and land are connected, the lamp is on. After about 5 minutes I realized that 1) my wick was too long, 2). I had reversed the lampshade, & 3). A thick layer of soot formed on the glass. BUT. It still looked cool! For real! OK, now a warning. If you want a quick coffee on your way out the door, this is NOT your coffee maker. It took over 40 minutes to make 5 cups of tap water. (I tried the recommended boiled water and 3 cups. It still took 34 minutes. In fact, I made my first cup of filter coffee in 15 minutes and I was still half-empty before the science experiment was complete. . ) So I was FINALLY ready for the first cup of amazing vacuum brewed coffee. It was . not impressive. I mean everything was fine. but it was like snack coffee. AND NOT! It took me another 30 minutes to remove all of the lampblack and soot. It was EVERYWHERE! And this soot. you can't just wipe it off. I ended up cleaning the floor, countertops and sink. And clean the coffee maker. So lamp oil. NO winner. As I said, I decided to give it a second try. I trimmed the wick to about 1/4 inch (half that I think) and used boiling water to the 3 degree mark, 3 tablespoons of ground coffee. As a result, a cup of coffee has become a little better and there is less soot. but it still took forever. So my final rating is this: If you want something that looks cool and makes a regular cup of coffee for dessert after dinner, spend $30. Otherwise I recommend it. Invest money at Keurig or buy a drip cone and permanent filter (like hemp or bamboo) No charcoal and no expectations! The whole process took maybe 10 minutes. We bought the ivation Butane Micro Burner and it was AMAZING. Now all I have to do is fine-tune the amount of ground coffee. Upgrade to 5 stars!
