Review on πŸ” GemRed Digital Protractor Inclinometer with Finder by Bryan Orozco

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Sturdy product that will be let down by a weak magnet

This is a first review of the GemRed 82418 digital level. Obsession Motorsport Video "Project Binky". I decided not to go with the cheapest available and went with this one based on the quality of the reviews and the IP67 water and dust rating. First impressions after less than a week are very good - it has exceeded my expectations, particularly where the build quality is concerned. Subtle white shipping carton with black and red lettering and an engineering style image opens to reveal plastic and cardboard packaging that is open without using a knife (much better than the alternative which is sealed up to an inch! ap), a basic nylon case/storage bag, instructions (mine was tucked in a nylon case) and three cheap AAA batteries. My level is Silver and not Blue as shown in the image above, not that I care. It lies well in the hand and feels well made. The end caps are rubberized and will protect the level if it falls, which can happen because the magnet in the base is not strong enough to hold the level's weight securely (more on that later). .To get the spirit level working, simply unscrew the small round connector at the end, insert three batteries (use the diagram on the spirit level to confirm alignment) and look at the screen to see how it turns on. decently articulated English, as opposed to the cryptically shy and semi-incomprehensible versions you get with a lot of Chinese-made stuff (like this). It describes the main functions, the main functions, how to use these functions and how to calibrate the level when you need it. While there is an odd misspelling and missing word, it's quite adequate and covers all the main features (that I can see) in one page. even if the cardboard insert describes the rubberized end caps as "anti-fall". Now for the evil magnet. Why would you build something like this into the device unless you can use it to attach and detach a bubble level to a magnetic surface? I think the problem is that the magnet is in the (aluminum?) case and therefore cannot stick directly to the surface in question. The window next to my desk has a metal frame and when I place a spirit level on the side of the frame and run it vertically up and down it makes a faint ringing noise as it is loosely attached to the frame but slides down the frame until he will (probably) catch paint defects and won't hold onto the ground waiting to fall off if you're not careful. Try gluing it to the bottom of a metal tube and it may or may not hang there, probably again until you look away and at the worst possible moment it may fall to the ground. Keep in mind that this is water and dust resistance, not shock resistance (although those rubberized anti-drop caps will help a bit). I still have to check the water resistance - IP67 confirms that the level should last for up to 30 minutes. at a depth of less than one meter in standing (not flowing) water. I'm tempted to do this - if that fails I'll return it and maybe look for one with a decent magnet. If it survives I might keep it and look for another if I really need one that will hold up better. see if I see a reason to change this.
