Review on Configear Aluminum Docking Ethernet Compatible by Adam Cooper

Requires power adapter for full functionality (sold separately)

I liked that this was a light weight travel station and a good price. Connection hole for AC power adapter, but the power adapter is not included. Trying to get an exact match is difficult (hard to figure out what hole size, volts and amps you're looking for in an adapter so it will provide enough power but not fry electronics, etc.) and expensive (retail). The prices are much higher than wholesale, mainly because it is almost a special item and additional shipping is built in; with economies of scale, the seller could easily get them for maybe $1 or $2 and resell them for $3, but would happily do $5-$10 if sold separately to cover shipping costs). Why is the power supply important? Well, if you try to use it with long cables, a few power-hungry peripherals (e.g. external hard drives that are USB powered and don't have their own power adapter), etc., it won't work. As it was with me. Is it possible to plug all its holes and not use long cables? I could and it would work. but then it wouldn't work as a handy dock/hub, which is what I used it for (my triple display flickered, external hard drives wouldn't read, and my mouse and keyboard cut out intermittently). However, if you only want to use it because your laptop doesn't have the necessary ports (RJ-45, SD card, etc.) then this works great.

Pros
  • Same as everything before
Cons
  • Good overall but...
