This built in volume control comes in a small thin plastic bag. It is made in China. The device, jack and plug are TRS so I cannot comment on performance with specific TRRS based headphones, headphones, smartphones and tablets. However, TRRS to TRS adapters (and vice versa) are readily available. Your application is simple and clear. Connect the headphone with TRS cable to volume control jack and volume control plug to your MP3 player, CD player, recorder or phone. Unlike the mainstream brand's built-in volume control with a 39-inch cable, this one is short and sweet and easy to keep clean and out of the way. The only potential downside is that the shoulder on the end of the fork might not be long enough to accommodate the thickness of form-fitting cases. It didn't quite fit on the test player (my Android smartphone) because the vinyl frame of the case was too thick. In operation it works perfectly. Volume control is smooth and consistent, no dead zones, no hiss, no crackle. For me it's a simple, unobtrusive and inexpensive way to control the volume of music without having to pull out an MP3 player in your pocket. Another good Revain deal!
