I found this device the best as a speed reading probe. It gives accurate and fast (not instantaneous) readings, and the long cord comes in very handy when you're working (with gloves) in a hot oven (e.g. reading bird data) or reading fried liquids, for example. The plastic probe probably won't hold up if left in the oven (and the instructions don't say so) for actual readings of roasts or poultry, so the alarm features might not be that important. The user needs to be careful with the probe: the cap is comfortable to the touch but hard enough to pull out the metal probe and expose the wire and probe, so the user needs to grab the metal probe and gently remove the cap. The instruction card is a little perfunctory but reasonable enough. In general, this can be especially useful for large dinners. during the holidays.
