If WD stopped storing its software on a hard drive and forced it to boot, that hard drive would get a much higher rating. Users really want a drive that looks like another hard drive in their system and NOT clunky software that slows down your computer and causes behavior that a user might not want in their computer. I already have a backup mode and only need disk space, not WD's sw. Once you follow WD's workarounds to wipe the software and reformat the drive (what a waste of time) it works fine. I use it to store backups of my DVDs and can view them from this device with no performance issues, pauses or latency, even on a 1.5GHz Duo processor. Good ride.
