Turns off when you take a cup. The cup is too heavy. And there should be a time limit. Your coffee will burn if you leave and don't remove the cup from the warmer. I bought a separate two hour timer and connected it to this timer. Now if I leave the room and forget to turn off the heating pad, the timer will automatically turn off the heating pad after two hours.
