The Motorola Arris Surfboard line of modems has a well deserved reputation for good performance and reliability. However, a few things have tarnished this image lately. It turns out that the SB6191 uses an Intel chipset that has some serious issues that can cause it to just drop dead after six months or a year, and the SB6141 (or at least the particular one I have) seems to have some trouble trying every 11 days or so to download a config file from somewhere which fails due to wrong file format and disconnects. After the reset, it returns to normal, but repeats the same thing after another 11 days. However, the older SB6121 offers download speeds of up to 172 megabits per second. So unless your ISP is promising you speeds in excess of 150 megabits per second, you probably shouldn't be looking at the SB6141. And if you need a faster modem, you might want to consider something other than the SB6141 or SB6191. Or of course, maybe I just have a bad modem. If you want to try 6141, go ahead. If it starts dropping connections every 11 days, point your browser to 192.168.100.1, watch the logs and see if the top entry has error code E2-6.0 with the message "Invalid CVC configuration file format". If it's true Yes, your modem has a problem.
