FREE from cable society!

I tried to "disconnect" from the cable company as much as possible. I live in Los Angeles and have TWC. I've rented several modems over the years and I don't even want to think about how much money I've spent on them. The main reason I've rented for so long is the implied support. If something goes wrong with a unit, you can call a TWC technician or take it to your local office for replacement. But for $100 I decided to try it for a week before returning the rented modem. And if for some reason

Pros
  • Quick replacement
Cons
  • Slightly dented

Does not meet the usual standards of the Arris Surfboard line

The Motorola Arris Surfboard line of modems has a well deserved reputation for good performance and reliability. However, a few things have tarnished this image lately. It turns out that the SB6191 uses an Intel chipset that has some serious issues that can cause it to just drop dead after six months or a year, and the SB6141 (or at least the particular one I have) seems to have some trouble trying every 11 days or so to download a config file from somewhere which fails due to wrong file format

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • No insurance

Chinese double?

I've been using the SurdBoard line for over 10 years but in the last year I've tried 5 of these SB6141 black blocks. They all arrive in brand new packaging and work great the first time you plug them in. They were cheap so I bought a few and have now looked through them all. The best I can say is that they don't like it when the power cord is disconnected/reconnected. Something seems to be frying preventing them from returning to the network, instead they endlessly switch status displays. I…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Almost everything is included
